Safety Consultants

Andy Evans

Principal Occupational Risk Consultant

Meet Andy; Master of Risk and Defender of Definitions.

Like many in health and safety, I didn’t set out dreaming about hazard registers or toolbox talks. I stumbled into the field almost by accident (thankfully not a literal one), and quickly discovered that preventing chaos suited me far better than creating it. Somewhere along the way, what started as “helping out with safety stuff” turned into a full-blown career in making sure people go home in one piece.

I’ve worked with organisations that range from mildly disorganised to full-blown crisis factories, and my approach is simple: strip away the fluff, focus on what actually keeps people alive, and add just enough humour to keep everyone awake during training sessions. I’m equal parts translator, problem-solver, and professional pessimist — the one constantly imagining what could go wrong so others don’t have to.

My goal? Keep workplaces productive, people healthy, and ensure that “fiery implosion” is just a figure of speech, not a headline.”

Tracy Dowling

Occupational Risk Consultant

Meet Tracy; Manager of Andy.

“Like many in Health and Safety, I didn’t grow up dreaming about high-vis vests and risk registers. I more or less tripped into the field while working as an Administrator in a compliance team – and discovered that not only was I good at it, but I actually enjoyed preventing chaos. Somewhere along the line, what started as “just a job” became a calling, and now I’m the person who spends her days thinking about what could go wrong so others don’t have to. I bring a no-nonsense, pragmatic approach – forged in the print and manufacturing industries and tested in both factory and warehouse environments. That’s where I cut my “safety teeth” (mercifully not literally). My goal is simple: keep people alive, uninjured and preferably with all their limbs intact – While keeping workplaces productive and sane.

Recently I’ve levelled up with a Level 6 Diploma in Workplace Health and Safety Management – proof that even safety nerds can graduate to the big leagues.”

Associates

Jared Kane

Occupational Risk Consultant

Meet Jared; Associate of Metanoia Safety.

Jared Kane is a health, safety, and risk management professional with experience across government, defence, and other high-risk environments.

He’s held senior leadership roles including Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Deputy Director of Health and Safety for the New Zealand Defence Force’s estate and infrastructure portfolio. He holds a Master of Professional Practice in Occupational Health and Safety (with distinction) and is a Professional Member of the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management.
Jared’s work is about bringing clarity to complex risk — especially where safety, governance, and organisational responsibility collide.

He focuses on how hazards, controls, decision-making, and organisational context interact in real life, not just on paper. This is particularly valuable in environments dealing with operational complexity, change, or competing demands.
His approach draws on real-world experience, structured analysis, and a strong understanding of how incidents develop over time. That allows him to support organisations in ways that go beyond templates and generic “good practice”, while still staying practical and grounded.

Jared believes good risk management should support momentum, not slow it — and that clarity is one of the most effective forms of protection an organisation can have.

John Lumby

Occupational Risk Consultant

Meet John; Associate of Metanoia Safety.

John’s career began on the coal face of industry, where safety is tested not in boardrooms, but in the reality of production, pressure, and people.
Through that experience, he saw firsthand how easily safety can drift into paperwork, policy, and good intentions that don’t always survive contact with real work. Too often, it becomes something done to workers, rather than built with them.

In 2017, John stepped into a role at a sawmill just as the Hazardous Substances Regulations were being introduced. What followed was an immersion in certifications, controls, signage, training, and the ongoing challenge of translating complex requirements into plain language. In the process, he formally moved into health and safety leadership — and discovered a genuine respect for the discipline when it’s done well.

In 2022, he founded Stealth Safety, supporting workplaces across Northland with practical health and safety advice, consultancy, and training.
Over the past eight years, John has strengthened his technical expertise, completing a New Zealand Diploma in Workplace Health & Safety Management, with Andy playing a part in that journey.

John specialises in hazardous substances management, focusing on cutting through regulatory noise to provide clear, practical pathways to compliance. His work is grounded in how tasks are actually performed — keeping systems usable, proportionate, and aligned with real operational risk.
